Houston - we have a garbage problem… Meelup Regional Park - TopicsExpress

Houston - we have a garbage problem… Meelup Regional Park stretches almost 12 km from Dunsborough to Bunker Bay and encompasses some of the world’s most magnificent coastline (and some of the world’s most unique flora and fauna). During the summer months (and sometimes in fishing season), litter accumulates alongside the roads, in the parking lots and beaches. (NOTE - “litter” is too nice a word for what is in fact garbage – beer cans, wine bottles, broken glass, dirty diapers, tangled fishing lines, cigarette butts and food wrappers. “Accumulates” is too nice a word for what is in fact dumping.) The City of Busselton workers do a magnificent job of cleaning the parking lots as often as they can. A month ago Meelup Regional Park began a “Coastal Clean Up” program where volunteers visit and clean every beach in the park on a daily or weekly basis. After a month, we thought we would notice a difference and in some places, we have.; in other places, not so much. The parking lot at Point Picquet is often a disgrace. More than 2 weeks after the Boxing Day “Tin-Can Tie Up” at Castle Rock, volunteers are still picking up the garbage from the rocks and the sand there. We’re hoping to have it clean and pristine again for Australia Day. (We’re grateful and thankful for the 7 young ladies who came back the day after Boxing Day to do their bit towards cleaning up the mess. Making the world a better place, -we could all learn from their example…)
