As President of Local 19, I take offense at this attempt to cast our union in a negative light due to the actions of a few bad individuals. Further, that the company would allow such a message to be transmitted in its email system is troubling. The fact is that the Teamsters take allegations and instances of wrongdoing within our organization very seriously. We do not tolerate corruption – period. It is no exaggeration to say that we are the cleanest union in the country because we are heavily monitored both internally and externally. Every individual cited in the TWU email for malfeasance or other misconduct was either permanently expelled from the organization or was otherwise fined or forced to personally repay monies improperly handled. We do not mess around when it comes to individuals who break the law and violate the trust of our members. Such individuals are swiftly and severely dealt with because we have strong mechanisms in place that function on a daily basis to uncover and root out all corruption. We take seriously abuses committed by officers or staff that undermine the integrity of our union and we always act in full cooperation with outside authorities as necessary. Within the Teamsters Union, good people are dedicated solely to our members’ interests every single day. Our sheer size means that occasionally there are those who may have the wrong intentions and they are immediately punished for abusing the privilege of representing our members. Strong internal policing keeps our union honest and committed to service on behalf of our members. Don’t be distracted by tactics designed to deny you the strong Teamster representation you deserve at AA. You should know that I am a 30-year aviation mechanic from Continental. All seven members of our Local Executive Board are certified AMTs with a combined experience of over 200 years. We understand the airline industry and the craft. Our Local is fully committed to representing you when you become Teamsters and we look forward to welcoming you as members of the largest union of aircraft mechanics and related.
