Houston, Tx.- Received my annual sign permit renewal bill from the City of Houston today for $179.00 so I can maintain the right to keep my pole sign on my private property for another year. I have (10) days to pay the bill or remove the sign. This is more proof that you never really own anything, which is also a proof that the government has gone too far. FYI- Signs that are permanently installed become a part of Real Property and the added value of that sign is part of the amount Im taxed on through my Harris County Appraisal District. I also carry insurance on that sign in case it ever falls on someone. This annual permit fee for a sign is just another taxation without representation and since the government cannot raise taxes on the voting public, they turn to businesses to get the needed revenues, which in turn, the businesses raise their prices of goods and services, and the voting public ends up paying for it anyway. Recently I priced a job for a potential customer who already had a price from a competitor that was not charging tax, nor did he have insurance or a license to perform the work (In other words Without Regulation), and he would complete the job in (3) days. When I tallied up my price (as a regulated company) I was (3) times higher than the unregulated competitor because of all the regulations, plus Tax and Plus Permit fees. I was also going to have a delay of 3 weeks for the permit acquisition plus about 3 days to get the job done. Many people complain about the Federal Govt being the problem, but the bigger problems that cause inflation really boils down to local govt, including Homeowner Associations. Seems that this mayor of Houston who has so much in common with California is leading us down the path that has just about bankrupt that state. Every year our permit fees increase and the city services get worse. In the late 70s, Texas Legislature voted to allow Cities to regulate Signs and other things that could be a safety concern for the public. Signs were deemed a safety issue, no longer part of the 1st amendment. It amazes me of how far weve come and theres no stopping it- Ive tried ! ...Thinking of the story of the Frog in the Boiling Pot of Water again, and too many people think things are the way they are supposed to be and they just deal with it. For the ones who are AWAKE, they know a revolution is coming when the sheeple finally see what has been taking place, but as long as its a gradual change, year after year, they the sheeple will never know to rebel.
