Houston regularly ranks highly in national surveys of economic prosperity but Houstonians are not impressed by their placing in the list of the world’s ugliest cities drawn up by the travel website U City Guides. It rates the world’s oil capital as the seventh ugliest after Guatemala, Mexico City, Amman, Caracas, Luanda and Chisinau in Moldova. The website states, “This is the United States’ fourth largest city when it comes to population but the attraction sure isn’t scenery. There are many other ugly American cities but this one should win the title of ugliest of them all, with a large impoverished and homeless population and a cityscape with no formal zoning regulations.”
