How Do Pre-Shave Oils Work? There is a common misconception that pre-shave oils work by providing lubrication. Their primary function is to increase the skin’s flexibility and moisture. In short, flexible and moist skin has less risk of becoming cut and irritated. Pre-Shave Oil penetrates the skin instead of acting as a lubricant on top of the skin, acting as a moisturizer. When the blade glides across moisturized skin the skin tends to give, and more of the whisker is exposed. The skin also flexes with the blade to conform better to the surface of the blade. In contrast, if the skin is dry it will not conform but rather cut and become irritated.
