How Low will You Go? Ever stop to think how low you will allow - TopicsExpress

How Low will You Go? Ever stop to think how low you will allow yourself to go to help another in need? How bad would the situation have to get before you would simply stop helping and start running the other way to avoid the bad press or the funny looks? We all face this decision when we see someone in need. We want to help, but it would be beneath us to stoop that low and grab hold of their reaching hand. We will often feel that we are not obligated, not willing, not responsible or not equipped to help, so we just keep moving in the other direction. We often will throw economics in to the decision making process and say that we are not rich enough to give, or that it is someone else’s job to take care of the situation. In the Bible, Jesus teaches us a lesson. This lesson involves humility at its lowest form. Jesus stops in the middle of the last supper and washes the feet of His Disciples, even the traitor. He does this to prove that there is nothing, no rules, no boundaries, no designated “foot washer” to step in. He encourages His chosen few to do the same. “So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, ‘Do you know what I have done to you? You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.’” John 13:12-17(NKJV) Sometimes I look at my feet and think that there is no one who would want to wash them. My feet are rather large and would take more than just a wash basin to clean them. But this lesson has nothing to do with washing feet. Jesus is telling them that they should humble themselves and do for others as He has done for them. He is encouraging them to never think of themselves as better or wiser than anyone, but that they should be willing to do whatever is needed to help others. There are no boundaries, no economic classes and no reputations to consider. The only thing we are to do is to help where and when we can. We should be ready to lend a helping hand anytime of the day or night. We just can’t get beyond our own lives to do this. We are willing to help, but only after we have all of our wants, needs and desires or our heart. We are more than ready to jump right in and volunteer our time and talents, but only after we have taken care of all our business and have nothing else to do. Jesus tells us “And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise..” Luke 6:31(NKJV) This may get us into trouble in the long run, because human nature tells us to do unto others BEFORE they do unto us. We just need to make a better effort to help our fellow man. We need to be willing to go as low as we need to in order to provide the help, regardless of who needs it or how much they need. When this starts to happen, we suddenly feel as if we are rich. We start to see the many blessings it brings to us by going “as low as we can go.” “in the world, not of the world”
