How Nokia Music beat iTunes Radio to the punch With the recent announcement of Apple’s iTunes Radio service, it’s interesting to note how ahead of the curve Nokia Music was – and continues to be – both in terms of timing and features. We take a look at how Nokia has thoroughly trumped its rival when it comes to producing a free and timely music streaming service. If you take an interest in the wider tech world like we do, you’ll have heard that Apple has announced iTunes Radio. It’s essentially a music streaming service which is set for launch some time this autumn. The first think we at NokNok would like to say to this news is: what took you so long? Nokia Mix Radio launched as part of Nokia Music back in 2011, providing free personalised radio stations for users of such classic Nokia devices as the Nokia Lumia 820 and the Nokia Lumia 720. It’s since developed and migrated to such cutting edge Windows Phone 8 devices as the Nokia Lumia 920, 820 , 720 and the Nokia Lumia 520. Expanding on that ‘free’ point for a moment, it’s also worth noting that Nokia Music with Mix Radio provides free music streaming with no adverts and no obligation to sign-up. Nokia Mix Radio: Why you should use it more iTunes Radio, by contrast, is only free if you accept the presence of adverts. Otherwise, if you want a non-ad-filled experience (and who doesn’t?) you need to sign up for an iTunes Match subscription. This costs a not-inconsiderable £21.99 per year. It also appears as if the service is geared towards prompting purchases of the full tracks, with a ‘buy’ shortcut featured prominently on each track page. Mix Radio, by contrast, is all about the music, favouring regular curated playlists and advanced personalised recommendations over trying to sell you something. Let’s leave the final word on the matter to Nokia Entertainment VP Jyrki Rosenberg, who had this to say to the news of Apple’s belated entry to the music streaming market. “It’s interesting to see Apple react now and it seems they continue to play catch up,” he said. “Nokia Music will stay true to our mobile-first approach and continue to deliver an extremely simple, personalised and contextual way to discover and enjoy music on the go.” For the only charge-free, ad-free, sign-up-free and mobile-focused music streaming service around, check out Nokia Music with Mix Radio on your Nokia Lumia 720 phone.
