How To Be Happy. “211 Things A Bright Boy Can Do” © Tom Cutler, 2006 Animals are happy so long as they are healthy and well fed, but people often arent. If you are one of the unhappy people who doesnt enjoy life, then this page is for you. Happiness scientists have discovered that cheerfulness is genetiacally programmed and is fairly impervious to lifes ups and downs. A group of millionaries is likely to be about as happy or miserable as a group of paraglegics. But this doesnt doesnt mean you cant train yourself to be generally hapier than you are. Instead of sitting every night polishing your Unhappiest Person of the Year Oscar, the best way to become happier is to focus on your strengths and talents – those things you are really good at and enjoy (don´t say ‘being miserable’). Happy people tend to use their strengths a lot. In addition, you should begin to behave happy. The following is a list of staggeringly simple behaviours that have been found to change the brain’s chemistry, so producing feelings of happiness. • Greet a stranger. • Do somebody a good turn. • Secretly cancel a grudge. • Ring an old mate and arrange to meet up. • Volunteer for something of absolutely no benefit to yourself. • Do some exercise. • Start growing a plant. • Watch a film, or read something, that really makes you laugh. • Turn the telly off and spend an hour on a hobby. It’s simple really. Happy people share some character traits. For example, they tend to have realistically modest aims. They are not eaten up by envy, shame, guilt, boredom or fear, but are full of zest, affection and real, warming both hands before the fire of life. They judge themselves against their own standards rather than those of others and aren’t constantly looking over their shoulders at the Joneses or relentlessly pursuing material ‘things’, a habit described by one psychologist as ‘toxic to happiness’. • I am optimistic and outgoing. • I forgive and forget. • I like myself. • I always see the best in others. • I have close friendships. • I get great satisfaction from my daily activities. • I occupy myself in an absorbing job or hobby that sometimes causes me to lose all track of time (e.g., zither playing, stamp collecting, or brain surgery).
