How amazingly talented and generous is Abdul Abdullah? This portrait weaves contemporary political context with heightened and imaginative pop culture references so seamlessly, and makes for a perfect provocation completely suited to its subject matter. And when you look at it in person, the scale and the technique are marvellous. Compellingly its formally different to his previous portraiture while holding onto signature motifs. Plus the science fiction riff blends seamlessly into his latest photographic series SEIGE. Also, to cap it all off, a new Planet of the Apes movie is being released this very week, showing that the allegorical nature of the series is still potent politically within popular culture. Its a wonderful convergence of influences and subjects distilled into a potent, hilarious work. Even the title is inspired. You know how sometimes you feel that hair-raising moment when an artist creates something that marks a significant milestone of having pushed into a unique and compelling territory? Thats the frisson Ive felt glimpsing this latest work. Im so proud to call him a close friend, to have worked alongside him and to have seen his work develop so vitally.
