How did the town of Ironwood Michigan get its name?? When I was growing up there, someone told me that Ironwood derived its name from Iron ore and logging. Thus Iron and wood. Ironwood. That made sense at the time. Then later I heard that Ironwood got its name from the Ironwood tree which is a hardwood unique to the area. Well, that made sense also. Then after decades went by someone told me that neither of these two scenarios are correct, that in fact the name Ironwood came into being because a man whose last name was Ironwood, founded the town. So now Im confused. Anyone out there know??
