How do two basic groups of people separated by political ideology - TopicsExpress

How do two basic groups of people separated by political ideology looking at an event and its presented facts come to two different conclusions? How we view an event says more about us than it does about the event. While we think and convince ourselves we are looking at facts objectively, indeed we are not. We bring with us all of our preconceptions, perceptions about the world with us which unconsciously directs us to an opinion that was already skewed to begin with. So what does your opinion about the Ferguson case say about you? It is quite possible that if you side with the cop you have a strong respect for authority and order in society and a disdain for unruly and untraditional behavior. This drives you to view the facts to fit your worldview. You cannot bring yourself to believe that an authority figure dedicated to protecting order would act irrational and lie about it. What about if you side with Brown? Maybe you distrust authority and feel they have a superiority complex and will treat those different than them wrongly. You like underdogs and fighting for justice and cannot bring yourself to think an underdog or someone like a minority would attack a cop. Siding with Brown gives you a purpose to fight for a cause which gives you meaning in life. Either way both sides cannot escape preconceived opinions. While most claim their view is based on the evidence the truth is you already formed a strong opinion in absence of it. Unfortunately, that opinion was based on a right wing or left wing persuasion.
