How odd. In 1985 I took a colleague form Accounts Payable at our East London Brewery (Trumans) out for drinks and poor Kate was horrified that I bought her a pint of our Best instead of a half. I had to apologize and go back to the bar to ask for a half jar to transfer said ale. She said she never had seen a woman in her beloved home of Yorkshire drink a pint and she would not violate the trust of her countrywomen. Thankfully I then took her to the Premiere of Desparately Seeking Susan at the Barbican and she switched to sweet white wine and forgave me my uncouth indiscretion. I think the origin of my position about beer’s gender is fairly simple to trace. Growing up in 1970′s and 1980′s Britain and watching my dad frequent pubs where women were simply not welcome, obviously gave me a perspective and historical reference point that is difficult to shake. Not only were women not welcome, most women were quite OK with that, and wouldn’t have wanted to spend any time in those pubs, anyway.
