How screwed am I? Ive been dying to get my Fisher Excalibur back - TopicsExpress

How screwed am I? Ive been dying to get my Fisher Excalibur back together but the fork situation keeps freaking me out. First off, this fork is original to the frame, as far as I can tell. The steer tube has not been cut, as it still has yellow paint on the end. I took this thing apart a couple years ago but didnt pay attention to the headset upon removal. Lo and behold, I go to put it back together with the original headset and notice how little thread there is for the top nut. What is going on? Did it leave the factory like this? Would you continue to use the original headset? There really arent many other period correct headsets with a lower stack height. I already tried a King and it wasnt any better by the time I installed a washer. Or would you try and find a correct fork with a long enough steerer? Does anyone else with one of these have this issue? Thanks.
