How selenium fights cancer Any cancer can wreck havoc on your immune system, but some do more damage than others. Melanoma, prostate cancer and some forms of leukemia, for example, can over-activate the immune system. It’s like an over-revved engine. And like that engine, your immune system can practically destroy itself if it continues. But new research in the Journal of Biological Chemistry finds the trace mineral selenium, already widely known for its cancer-fighting powers, can undo some of that immune-system damage, slowing it back down and getting it working the way it should. You’ll find selenium in certain foods, such as garlic and broccoli, but the levels can vary widely based on soil conditions where they’re grown. Many quality multivitamins now contain selenium, and it’s also sold on its own. While selenium is perfectly safe in low doses, too much can cause problems – so speak with a doctor before increasing your levels beyond what’s in your multi. A typical daily dose is 100 to 200 micrograms daily. markstengler
