How shall I keep you, And yet keep you free? You are so much a part of me. Every sound and sight of my world has you in it. The breeze, trees, pieces of conversation Make me think of you . . . and smile. You must be absent, Present to others, Out of my sight and touch, Exercising your freely chosen commitments, Living your life, Preserving who you are. Will you choose to choose me, As deliberately and consciously As I have chosen you? Will the stuff which has hung us together beyond our choosing Survive distance and distraction? The clearest thing is this: No compulsion, no manipulation Can bring a future into being. So I sleep and I wake, Attracted, distracted, In and out of sanity, Touched at every turn by your being. Go whatever way you must, I must live with whatever is given , No matter what I desire. Find your way to me if you will, Leave me alone if you must. I shake inwardly, continuously At the knowledge of my caring And the reality of your freedom.
