How should we, as a society, decide what everyone will do today? If we let each individual decide for himself, who knows what negligent, irresponsible, or downright malicious stuff people might choose to do? How could we guarantee that people will organize and cooperate if left to their own devices? We cant just rely on every man for himself or civilization will crumble before the day is over! So who has the master plan for assigning everyone tasks and activities for today? We need to appoint someone--or maybe a small group of people--with the wisdom, compassion and integrity to come up with a really good overall plan for what society should do today. Then, of course, wed have to do it all over again tomorrow. And every day after that. So if we can find the wisest and most virtuous people for today, we might as well leave them there. After all, SOMEONE has to be in charge! We need leaders! How else will anything get done? How else will we move forward? I mean, how would YOU know what to do with your day without planners and rule-makers to guide you? Could YOU behave in a civilized manner if not for law-makers and law-enforcers keeping you in line? How would you have any idea how to spend your time, and how could you know what you should and shouldnt do, without a central committee making rules and coming up with a master plan for you--and everyone else--to follow? Think of the chaos! So we should all stop for a moment and give thanks to government, and the wise, wonderful, caring people who run it, for giving us meaning, purpose and direction in our lives! Where would we be without them?
