How to Soften Brown Sugar Do you have an almost new bag of brown sugar that is hard? I actually learned how to re-soften it when I was nine years old at the County Extension Office when I was there for a 4-H meeting. Actually, I learned a lot of things there because I was in 4-H for nine years. . .and later was a 4-H leader myself when my girls were young. Here’s what you do. Put your brown sugar in a bowl and place it in the center of your microwave with a small cup of water next to it. Microwave on HIGH for up to 2 minutes (depending on how hard it is). Be sure and check it every 20-30 seconds. Occasionally stir and loosen with a spoon. Continue until you reach your desired consistency. Once your brown sugar is ready, store it in a sealed plastic container. Something new that I’ve learned since then is to add a piece of bread in the container with the brown sugar to keep it moist and soft. After 2 days, the sugar will be moist and the bread will be completely dried out. Be sure to remove the piece of bread.
