How to Turn Your Greatest Opponent into Your Greatest Friend by Makana It is the Mind- not another person- that is your greatest friend or greatest opponent. It is the Mind that frames the neutrality of Being, and this occurs unceasingly, both in waking and in sleep. How the Mind responds to challenge- tension, pressure, stress- is largely influenced by what story (if any) the Mind is carrying forward. Tension seeks release; pressure compresses, then stretches; stress envenoms. The Mind must respond. Or, at least, it believes it must. The Mind is at once a master locksmith, opening hidden doors via imagination and sensitivity, then, an internal snake coiling, constricting, striking, and poisoning, literally, the blood that runs in your veins. It is a wild animal: at times docile, but deadly when afraid. It must be understood for Clarity to receive an invitation. Understanding the Mind requires silence, aloneness, contemplation, inaction, stillness, observation, emptiness, surrender. The misunderstood Mind swiftly becomes an opponent, a snake in tall grass slithering stealthily in search of a target to strike with the venom of attribution. It seeks to transmit the disease of Blame. Such attempts to expunge this venom merely circulate it further. The habit- the convenience, really- of ultimately attributing causation of suffering to some external point- a person, place, or situation- is misleading at best, destructive at worst. It is a practice that immediately and totally disempowers oneself, denying the inherency of response-ability. Circumstance may be dire, but removing the Minds ability to respond from a place of strength is a deathblow. Investigate *inside*. As an experiment- assume inner causation. See how that works. Recognize the immensity of your ability to construct and affect circumstance and to weave stories around such. The actors on your life stage were each invited by you; many received invitations prior to your birth. Circumstance, the decoration of your life stage, is there to contribute color and depth to the story of You. The Mind decides where its boundaries of influence end- and then, assumptive projection, false attribution and inventive association begin. Why carry a story that paints you a victim? Why limit your power and influence over your own experience? Investigate your previous choices, offers, actions and agreements. Recall the moment you acted from fear- the moment you dressed that fear in love, weaving a story that sounded wonderful but veiled your true intent. It was convincing, for you are grand actor. Such a talent! Bravo. It not only snared others- the story replaced the truth in your own Mind. And now, the day of reckoning, when the story meets the child of the truth: reality. Reality, an abandoned child, who longs to meet its progenitor, but cant find it, because it is buried deep in your Mind, hiding behind an unraveling story that labors to exist a bit longer, only supported by the mechanism of fear, the same mechanism that hid the truth behind a story in order to gain, believing it was not enough. Believing *You* were not enough. But you *are* enough. And you are no victim of another. Read that again: You are no victim of another. Notice what happens in your body as you read that. Each Mind responds differently. If you know this to be true, if you are completely free of the belief that you are a victim in any manner- stop reading Now. Your Mind is already your Greatest Friend. Aloha. The following is for the Mind that coils further in defense, alarmed by such an absolute, impossible claim: So you are a victim.. maybe just a little? Is that what you believe? That is a heavy story to carry forward. Like a low-grade fever, it tires the Soul, burdening Now with the weight of a misrepresentation of past. How long can you keep this up? It is stressful my Friend. It destroys that which you Love. Does it not? Let the truth out, not out of your mouth, but out of your Mind. The truth: that picture that appears in your Mind when all of the tension, pressure and stress have fallen away, along with all of the things, people and situations that cause you tension, pressure and stress. Introduce the truth to its progeny: present circumstance with no story! This is radical. Let it lead you home, away from the things and people and situations that hurt you- yes, those things and people and situations you believed you needed in order to be You- let the truth of Now lead you Here. Because Here, the Mind never suffers. Here demands surrender of the Mind. Here tension, pressure and stress never become suffering. They are dealt with efficiently and effectively. Mind, meet Breath. Breath will chaperone you to Here. Sorry Thought, you cant come along. Only Breath. Now breathe! As Mind arrives Here, it becomes your Greatest Friend, even as your greatest opponents doff their masks to reveal they, too, are your friends. And this is how you turn Mind, your greatest opponent, into your greatest friend: Drop the story Take full responsibility Let go of attachments Breathe ----- (postscript) You ask me what day is garbage pickup. Its now, and now, and now and now and now and now... What are you waiting for? Take out the trash already! EXHALE. I love you. Youre good enough. Now lets go have some fun ;)
