How to argue with this...? Perhaps these men are uneducated hillbillies? Maybe they are recent converts who dont understand islam yet? Or perhaps they are just paedophiles trying to mis-use islam to justify child rape? Or perhaps they are right? Aisha was 7 (or 6 depending on your source) when she was engaged to be taken as the marital property of a man. And nine when the prophet first raped her. Where is the notion of consent here? Do they really regard unmarried women as property like this? Why doesnt islam have an unequivocal message of equality for women? Why no explicit statement that a woman has a right to control her own body and her own life? Thou shalt not marry a woman without her freely given consent would be simple, immune to mis-interpretation and set an unarguably high bar for social ethics. But the koran (nor any other religious text) says any such thing. Surely a last revelation would establish ethics and morals of the very highest standards? Since the secular west has already evolved beyond the islamic world morally, clearly the koran is either not the last revelation, or it is not the best standard by which to live. Either way, surely we should question it and think again - and ask ourselves seriously if this invisible and arrogant god really has (or had...) our best interests at heart? After all, if a mere atheist can come up with better morality than a supreme god, it cant be a very good god, can it?
