How to beat Amazons ass in the e-book arena: -Set up an easy to use, easy to browse store that provides a free preview. Not hard in this era. -Provide DRM-free e-books and apps that will allow users to read those e-books on all e-readers, smart phones, etc. Dont make your own e-reader; just piggyback on the ones that are already available. People want to read their e-books any time on any device. -To get people to convert to your store, offer to replace all of the proprietary e-books they currently own from Amazon or elsewhere with DRM-free versions at no cost up to a specific limit. If they can replace most of their library, they will be more willing to move. For anything you cant replace, offer a credit or discount toward purchasing something new. -Give people a fun book reader profile they can customize, and the ability to leave extremely short book reviews, so that people can browse reviews quickly rather than having to scroll through endless screeds. -Offer self-published e-books in a separate section. Give self-published authors the ability to manage their own price point, run special sales, and bundle e-books into collections. -If you want to get super-fancy, go to publishers and work out a deal to create a subscription library for backlist and low-selling titles. Offer the library for a low monthly or annual fee. Everyone makes a little extra money on titles that can still fill a small niche need, and as new titles get older, they can be automatically added per a contract worked out with publishers and/or self-published authors. -Make the experience about the buyer and the reader, rather than about investors and executives.
