How to care for a young person dying of a brain tumor: 1. Understand that this person will lose their memory. They will confuse you with other people, call you by the wrong name or completely forget who you are. 2. Know that they are most certainly in the worst pain imaginable.. Not only from their head, but their entire body, due to immobility and disuse. 3. Know that they will lose control of all bodily functions, and that vomiting will also happen due to pain. 4. Know that as a young person, the rest of their body is still strong. Heart and lungs are unlikely to give out any time soon. 5. Brain tumors often have the side effect of seizures. Not little ones, big... Horrible, thrashing, long-lasting seizures. If a seizure passes without actually causing aspiration (choking to death on your own vomit or secretions) more are sure to come. 6. The actual cause of death, in this situation comes from starvation. Eventually, not being able to take in food or water leads to dehydration. After what can take several days, the body will shut down on its own and the person will become unresponsive. 7. An end-of-life breathing pattern will begin. It sounds like gasping, and snoring, and then slowing, and then starting over again. This pattern, too, can last for several days. Before the last breath of the broken, sunken, emaciated shell of someone who used to be a beautiful human being, is taken. Now go ahead and tell me that the choice of Brittany Maynard was not merciful.. Not only to herself but to the loved ones surrounding her, who would have had to witness all of this. Im taking a deep breath, letting it go and praying that people who feel the need to be judgemental of her decision, are spared the fate of ever having to experience this with their own loved ones. That is all.
