How to demarcate between Halal and Haram There are times when we cannot help but feel confused on certain matters, or whether this or that thing is permissible (Halal) or forbidden (Haram). When we are caught in this situation , we are being advised by the Holy Prophet(SAW) to shun what appears to be doubtful to us to avoid committing the forbidden or Haram. This Prophetic guidance would surely keep us away from the prohibited matters and let us stick and adhere to the permissible. For example: If you think that the food you are about to buy from any fast-food chain might contain Haram such as pork or wine, you better not buy it. Instead, just look for another alternative. If the business you want to engage in is not Sharia-compliant, or doubtful by Sharia standard, then you better keep away from it. As Muslims, we must always try our best to put demarcation line between the Halal and the Haram in all circumstances. Lets have a look at the following Hadith: On the authority of Abee `Abdillaah an-Nu`maan ibn Basheer - Radiyallaahu `anhumaa - who said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah - Sallallaahu `alayhi wasallam - say: That which is lawful is clear and that which is unlawful is clear, and between the two of them are doubtful matters about which many people have no knowledge of. Thus, he who avoids doubtful matters clears himself in regard to his religion and his honor, But he who falls into doubtful matters, falls into that which is unlawful, Like the shepherd who pastures around a sanctuary, all but grazing therein. Truly every king has a sanctuary, and truly Allaahs sanctuary is His prohibitions. Truly in the body there is a morsel of flesh, which, if it be whole, all the body is whole, And if it is corrupt, all of the body is corrupt, Truly, it is the heart. Reported by Bukhaaree and Muslim
