How to learn from the past … so that we don’t repeat - TopicsExpress

How to learn from the past … so that we don’t repeat it. Now that the old spender is gone, the new administration needs to find answers to some old, important and yet unanswered questions. And I hope we will not get the usual “you don’t understand the issues” answer, as we always got from the past administration. Because we do understand the issues very well, we need to get answers to some old unanswered questions, which have been asked but ignored for years. For instance; how did Redding get from a budget of $24.1M in 2000, to the current budget of $47.5M? And this current budget doesn’t include $2.5M just added or the cost of JBHS roof, which we have known for sometime that needs to be fixed? How did the 2000 education budget of $17.2M get to the current $32.6M? How did we make the mistake of replacing the State Police service with our own and which had a budget of $900K in 2000 and which now spends $2.1M. Has the Police Department been independently audited in the last 14 years? If it has not been audited, why not? The new administration should spend the time to look into all these issues before we just blindly dive into current routines and shove the past under the rug hoping that nobody will notices. In two years, the opposing party will make an attempt to regain control of Redding’s spending and they will, no doubt, attempt to blame the past 14 years of spending on the current newly elected administration. That is also why, the current administration would be well advised to be very, very careful with our money and what they spend it on. Alexander Gray
