How to proving that biblical teaching is false? Chris McCann Is it true, as some claim, that you can get the Bible to prove anything? The real question is: has God left us helpless, defenseless against false doctrines and gospels, unable to discern any difference between the truth and a lie? While it is true that many use the Bible to attempt to prove their own ideas and unbiblical teachings-----it is also true that simply throwing some verses together and coming to a conclusion is not proving anything. God instructs His people on exactly how to find truth in His Word: first we compare spiritual with spiritual; next, we make sure that the conclusion we come to harmonizes with all the rest of the Bible. Thirdly, we go to the Lord in prayer to request His help in making sure that His Spirit guides and keeps us in the path of truth. This can all be summed up by the Lords declaration that His sheep know His voice. If a Bible study manages to pass all of the above criteria it almost always is the result of it being the true teaching of Christ. It is through this proper biblical methodology that the elect children of God have been able to discern the deceitfulness of todays churches. God has equipped His saints to listen carefully and to check out all that they hear taught from the Bible by His prescribed method of coming to truth. The idea that some put forth you can prove anything by the Bible is not true. As a matter of fact applying Gods methodology of comparing Scripture and making sure all conclusions harmonize can easily find error in numerous doctrines taught by those in the churches and outside of the churches. The Lord has not left us in a sort of helpless and ignorant state. He expects us to study to show ourselves approved. A workman that is able to rightly divide His Word. If it is not true that anything can be rightly proven from the Bible, then why do some make this type of comment? Sadly, it would appear that it is a casual and spiritually lazy way of dismissing a teaching as un-biblical. Casual and lazy because the one making the statement is normally responding to a teaching theyve heard and disagree with. Yet, they are not willing to take the time to properly check it out (as a Berean) in the Bible to see if its so. Therefore this kind of statement is made to brush the teaching aside with a sort of wave of the hand. If someone thinks that something is unbiblical then that person ought to be able to use Gods methodology of comparing spiritual with spiritual to show why it is not faithful to the Bible. The conclusion of the teaching one disagrees with should be held up to the scrutiny of the whole Bible and it should be shown where it does not fit, or just where it lacks cohesive harmony with the Word of God.
