Howdy Cakefans! Well I hope we’ve all been making good use of the crazy weather – I couldn’t help feeling sorry yesterday for all those little kids wrapped up as mummies etc passing out due to heatstroke! This week I realised I needed a phone app calendar that was colour coded to show the school holidays, that way when I’d arranged with my sister weeks ago to meet up and give her a London tour we’d have realised it was half-term and agreed on a different date. Nevertheless on Thursday we met in the morning at Liverpool St. along with my nephew and walked down to the Tower of London to have a look at the poppies. Unfortunately so had the rest of the population but we managed to elbow our way to the front and it really is quite a spectacle. You can’t really get a sense of just how many poppies there actually are unless you’re standing there, it gives one an immense sense of the lives wasted. However then you can’t help thinking of the work that went into it – I mean I presume they’re all handmade - and there’s thousands and thousands and THOUSANDS of them! It must have taken YEARS! And then they had to arrange them all and fix them into the ground .. Well done! Then we battled our way over Tower Bridge and promenaded along the south side of the river past City Hall through the continuous throngs that all seemed to be coming in the opposite direction and towards Borough Market to get some lunch. I’ve suddenly developed a passion for Ethiopian food, there’s a lady who does great things with a stew and sides at Partridges Market sometimes and I was lucky enough to come across an Ethiopian food stall I hadn’t seen here before - so that was me and the sister sorted whilst the nephew went for a double venison sausage in a bun type thing. We sat in the grounds of Southwark Cathedral (or ‘that little church by the river’ as my nephew remembered it!) where we seem to have stumbled into the funeral of a notable local, as a coffin was carried out followed by several Bishops and thirty or so vicars as well as an abundance of other mourners. Then there was a demand for cake so we delved back into the market to satisfy their craven desires, and the rest of the afternoon was spent continuing our promenade up past the Southbank. On the way we came across this busker with an accordion who I had to snap and then donate a pound to for sheer brass neck and comedy value if nothing else! .. But a most enjoyable day spent and really great to catch up. As this weekend contains the first Sunday of the month it means that not only have we our regular Saturday Markets at Hackney and Chelsea, but also our local once-monthly Sunday Market at West Norwood Feast. So head on down and enjoy what just HAS to be the last of the summer! This week’s COVERT CAKE CODE for a FREE BOX of our delectable Dainties for the first down to any of our stalls shall be … ‘SO WHAT SUMMER COMES AFTER AN INDIAN SUMMER?’ Embrace the joy Cakefans!
