Include Northeast Culture, Lifestyle in CBSE Meghalaya | Oct. 18: In the wake of more incidents of attacks on students from the Northeast coming to fore, the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has demanded capital punishment for the perpetrators of such heinous crimes at the earliest. In a memorandum submitted to Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh and his deputy Kiren Rijiju, NESO Chairman Samuel Jyrwa also stressed upon the need for setting up of special police cells in all the metro cities to cater specifically to cases related to racial discrimination and atrocities on the students and people from North East in line with the existing Delhi model, with a provision that it is manned by police officers from NE states. The students’ body also demanded inclusion of the North East- its geographical location, its people, its culture and ethos in the syllabus of schools under all State Boards and Central Boards including the CBSE. The students’ body also stressed the need for enactment of a stringent law to deal with crimes against the people from North East. NESO also drew the attention of the Centre on the recent incidents in Bangalore and Gurgoan on October 15 and 16 respectively. While T Micheal Lamjathang Haokip from Manipur was severely assaulted in Bangalore, Awang Newmei and Aloto Chishion from Nagaland were brutally assaulted in Sikanderpur in Gurgoan. “These incidents of assaults, molestations are happening on a frequent basis resulting in a feeling of insecurity especially among the women folk,” NESO said, while reminding that there was a huge uproar and protest after the murder of Nido Tania which prompted the then Central Government to take reactive measures and also a Committee under the Chairmanship of MP Bezburuah was formed to look into the measures that the Central Government can adopt to prevent such untoward incidents. NESO also sought the intervention of the Centre to take up the recent cases with the Governments of Karnataka and Haryana so that effective measures are taken to instill a sense of security in the students and people of the North Eastern region studying and residing in Delhi and other parts of India. KSU asks Centre to act against “racism”: The KSU has condemned the harassment and assault of students from the Northeastern states who are pursuing their studies in “Mainland India”. In a statement issued here KSU president Daniel Khriem lamented that despite repeated assurances, the Centre has failed to protect the students from Northeast from harassment which amounted to racism. The Union reiterated that the Centre should initiate concrete actions against perpetrators of crimes against those from the region and also provide immediate relief and financial assistance to all the victims of such racist attacks.
