How’s your Bible IQ? Can you solve the following controversy? In the “Bible Prophecy” class I attend on Sunday mornings the following verses found in Matthew 24:30-31 were introduced while discussing the book of Zechariah. Here are four possible interpretations of this passage. Not all can be correct, check it out. “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other. Mathew 24:30-31 1. Our teacher suggested this passage was in reference to God gathering the elect of “Israel” (not the church) during a future “seven year tribulation period.” 2. Some contend this is in reference to the Rapture of the “church.” 3. A good number of evangelical scholars (i.e. Thomas Ice) teach these verses are in reference to the final resurrection at the end of the 1000 year reign of Christ. 4. Many believe these verses represent the gathering Believers of Jesus Christ; following the destruction of Jerusalem and her temple in 70 AD; thereby, ending one age (the Old Covenant) and introducing a new age, i.e. “the Church Age.” What do you think?
