Huh.. Obama wants to make 2 years of community college free. Interesting. I see some problems. 1) A two year degree at a community college really isnt the issue where costs are concerned. Going beyond that is. Even I was able to easily afford College of the Canyons on my own at 19. 2) Why would it have to cost an estimated $80,000,000,000.00? Have these people never heard of the Internet? Set up web servers to offer free education to people. Streaming videos, audio, podcasts, the whole bit. Require persons to show up at an accredited test center, college, or university to prove what they know. Award degrees. Obviously some details would need to be worked out. Including finding a capable IT group to implement the systems at a cost that wasnt just some politicians BS to give money hand over fist in the form of a way over priced contract to one of their supporters. I still see this as being way more viable than what theyre talking about. Hell - if YouTube can receive ~72 hours worth of content - PER MINUTE - and stream HUGE volumes of data - why would online education be any different? For that matter.... Why cant the Department of Education simply set up a YouTube Channel? Free hosting is too expensive for them? Oh, hold up. They have one. https://youtube/user/usedgov Hmmmmmm... now if only there was a way to offset the costs.. Oh!!! I know. Of course.. Google AdSense. Monetize the videos of the free courses. Not too sure exactly what sort of revenue that may produce, but... well ... There are YouTube stars making a LOT MORE money than pretty much any of us. So, lets see. Whats more expensive? A) Zero income. B) Income. Tough choice! Or they could just setup their own infrastructure from the ground up and forget about YouTube. And it wouldnt have anywhere near the same volume or technical requirements. Plus the load could be mitigated by not having a fully open system, available to every body, all the time, without exception. Maybe years later after the infrastructure had time to mature and technology continue to improve such limitations could be lifted. And thats only if its even a problem to begin with. I cant imagine 10s of millions of people taking English 101 500 times in their life time for example... Just sayin... Seems awfully dumb to me. *shrug*
