Humans are terrible at observing things. Simply put, our point of view is far too limited. We live in a very particular environment where we are barely conscious of the very things that make up the environment. Our vision is limited to a microscopic slice of the electromagnetic spectrum, and our brains do not even work fast enough to process all the visual information we get, so it works with a kind of shorthand method of storing such information rather than the actual information itself. I wanted to show people this demonstration. Its a very simple one, most people with even a limited education know how it will turn out and some have even seen it in a smaller scale. The reason I wanted to share this video though was for another reason... It remains amazing. The idea behind this age old experiment is very old... older than the technological means to actually perform the experiment. Using science and logic, a human was able to figure out what would happen under these circumstances, and some time later it was proven experimentally, and it is one of the most simple demonstrations of how the universe works, and is totally inconsistent with a human point of view. In order to perform this experiment, you need a near perfect vacuum; something humans never experience in their daily lives, and something a human would not even survive in if it did. Watch the video. On paper, its not that amazing, but seeing it on this scale... well, even a world renowned physicist and a bunch of rocket scientists cannot help but smile and laugh in delight at its results. I dare say that you will too. Using science, we find that the rules that drive nature do not act in such a way that seems logical from our limited point of view. We get cold weather when the Earth is undergoing global warming, because weather is not global temperature, and yet that global warming will act to cause extreme cold weather. A feather falls (or not if you watch the entire video) at the same rate as a bowling ball, just never in our limited experiences. Have fun with the video guys!
