Hundreds of thousands of Nepalese women suffer from uterine prolapse, a condition where the womb drops into the vagina and, in severe cases, slides out of the body. In a society where women are expected to have many children, starting at a young age, Samita Pradhan, of the Womens Reproductive Rights Programme, says the problem is as much one of human rights as it is health: They cant say, I dont want to get married at the moment, or I want to go to school, or I dont want to work continuously, or I want to take a rest. Thats how Nepalese girls grow up.
