Hurricane Gonzalo made a direct hit on Bermuda with winds gusting to 130 mph followed by an eerie calm as the eye passed overhead. As the eye went over the island, the folks at the local weather service managed to launch a weather balloon to collect data from the heart of the storm! But now the back end of the hurricane is lashing the island with winds coming from the opposite direction. The little dark speck in this animation is the island of Bermuda. Notice how huge tropical thunderstorms flared up right before the eye moved overhead.
