Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Louisiana on August 29th, 2005. We survived. This memorial altar is for the 1,876 confirmed dead, and the many who died and went uncounted. I painted this altar to honor those lost and to celebrate the street culture in New Orleans. NOLA has a way of bonding people. Neighbors gathered on steps and porches and said hello as you walked down the street. Parades passed. This house was inspired by the home of my beloved neighbor, the late Mr. Joey. I found out he died from the altar on the sidewalk. The altar within the altar. The cemetery across the street really did reflect in his window. I bent geography to have my parents house reflect in his riverside window, and added elements of their home. It took eight feet of water, but they survived. I am so grateful to everyone who was able to return and rebuild. Thank you.
