Hurriyat M’s Shopian march foiled Mirwaiz others placed under house arrestAuthorities Friday foiled Hurriyat (M’s) Shopian march by placing Mirwaiz Umar Farooqand other leaders and activists of the conglomerate under house arrest. A senior police officer said Mirwaiz and several other leaders of the conglomerate were placed under house arrest as a precautionary measure. Mirwaiz had called for a march to Shopian town to express solidarity with the people following killing of five youth in two separate incidents of firing allegedly by CRPF personnel on September 7 and September 11. Shopian town remained under curfew for 14th consecutive day today. Meanwhile, Hurriyat (M) spokesman denounced use of force by administration to foil “Shopian protest” march. “In order to foil the Shopian march, authorities extended the house arrest of Mirwaiz for 4th consecutive day today. A large posse of police men surrounded his Nageen residence and cops sealed all roads leading to his residence,” he said. He said Prof Abdul Gani Bhat, Moulana Abbas Ansari, Bilal Gani lone, Agha Syed Hassan Al Moosvi Al Safvi, Shahid-ul-Islam and Zaffar Akbar Bhat were also placed under house arrest. “Mukhtar Ahmad Waza was arrested on his way to Shopian and locked in Police Station Sadder Islamabad. Salim Geelani was also arrested and lodged at Rainwari police station while Hakim Abdul Rashid was arrested last night and lodged in Police station Lal Bazar,” he said. The spokesman said people of Shopian are being subjected to wanton oppression and curfew continues to be imposed there from past 14 days thus keeping them devoid of daily necessities like milk, vegetables, and other things. “The entire separatist leadership and people, who want to express solidarity with the residents of Shopian in these hours of hardships are being stopped from protesting such an inhuman treatment to the Shopian inhabitants on gun point and by means of brutal force,” he said. The spokesman said early this morning, large number of Hurriyat activists and leaders gathered at Jamia Masjid and took out a protest march towards Shopian. “However, large number of police and CRPF men intercepted them by firing tear gas shells and reorting to heavy baton charge. Many people were injured in police action,” he said. He said braving the police attack, procession led by Mohammad Shafi Khan and Yaqoob Masoodi reached Rangar Stop, where they were again attacked by police and paramilitary troops. “Police also raided Mirwaiz Manzil Rajouri Kadal, Head office of Awami Action committee and conducted a search operation there,” he said. The spokesman said after Friday prayers, thousands of people gathered outside Jamia Masjid and started proceeding towards Shopian. “Once again, police and CRPF men came heavily on the protesters injuring many of them”. He said that many Hurriyat leaders and senior activists were successful in reaching Shopian. “A delegation led by Musadiq Adil, Syed Bashir Andrabi, Abdul Majid Wani, Mohammad Farooq Mamoosi and Yasmeen Raja visited the bereaved family of Gagren victims. Another delegation led by Mohammad Khalil, Jehnagir Gani Bhat, Chowdhary Shaheen Iqbal, Abdul Rashid Untoo also visited Saidapora Shopian and condoled with the bereaved family”. “Javid Ahmed Mir along with dozens of Hurriyat activists also succeeded in reaching Saidpora, shopian. GN Zaki offered prayers with Imam of Jamia Masjid shopian in a local house as Jamia Masjid Shopian was under siege. Later they visited the house of Tawseef Ahmad Bhat,” he said.
