Hyderabad city improved its points in City Biodiversity Index (CBI) from 39 points in October 2012 to 59 points this month. GHMC commissioner MT Krishna Babu said that: “Our target is 65 points by the time next CoP-12 is held at Korea in October 2014.” “Chief minister wanted us to improve biodiversity index points up to 65 points. We are trying to reach the target,” Babu told a women employees gathering on environment at the Secretariat on Saturday.Hyderabad was the first city in the country to have a CBI, which is a self-assessment and monitoring tool for matters relating to biodiversity in cities. It comprises 23 indicators in three components: native biodiversity, ecosystem services and governance and management of biodiversity. Hyderabad has joined a group of 14 international cities to come out with the CBI and is ranked somewhere in the middle of the cities that already have such an index. By 2014, Hyderabad may be one among the first four cities in the world. The biodiversity index will help the authorities to evaluate the programmes made in increasing the biodiversity. “After the CoP-11 conference in the city, people were evincing keen interest in conserving the biodiversity,” Krishna Babu said
