Hyderabad police cry for more hands... Hyderabad: Despite Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s tall talks on sprucing up the police force and equipping the Hyderabad city police on par with NYPD and Scotland Yard, the fact remains that majority of police stations across the city are understaffed. Police personnel in the lower cadre feel that apart from increasing infrastructure of the police department, the government should also focus on increasing the number staff to meet the requirements of the city and citizen-friendly policing. While each police station must have between 150 and 70 constables, more than half of them are vacant. About 15 are still attached to senior officers. Only the remaining constables numbering 15 to 20 go on field. Of them, two to three are posted to man the new vehicles,” says a constable. They are also not sure how the department would implement the weekly off rule as most of them continue to work for two and sometimes three shifts. They do not even get casual leaves and sometimes have to work for more than 24 hours at a stretch. They allege that no official thinks of its impact on the health of the constable. Whenever there is a strike or festive season, the situation only gets worse for the constables on the field. Some of them remain on bandobast duty for 36 hours at a stretch. Some of policemen say that the government should invite applications from all over the State, rather than keeping the eligibility criteria to the city. This, they point out, will increase the strength of the city police. “We have been giving representations to the government to increase the strength, which would help attain a balanced ratio with the population,” says Shankar Reddy, city president, Telangana Police Officers’ Association.
