I AM ONE LUCKY GUY. Late yesterday after hiking about 14 miles I arrived at the Santa Cruz campground hoping to put up my tent. Bad news! The campground is full with no spaces available. I dont know how many of you have ever walked 14 miles pushing 100 pounds of gear just to lay on the ground at the end of the day to find out there is no ground available. The next town was 7 miles away and that was not going to happen. Besides Motel 6 in Watsonville was already full. Dodi was the lady who handles reservations and she was feeling almost as bad as me. Finally she said that I could have an RV slot with a concrete pad to put my tent on. It was her last spot so I took it for $68 because there were no more options. At least I had a bathroom and shower. A happy camper I was UNTIL........... As Dodi was preparing to sign me in, she said ut oh! Within 2 minutes someone had taken my spot by registering for it online. We both stood there with our why me Lord expressions. 30 seconds later I thought Dodi had hit the lottery when a cancelation for cabin #131 popped up. Dodi told me last minute cancelation with fee forfeiture seldom happens. Good news as I now have a cabin, front porch and swing, bed, couch and cable television for the same price she offered earlier. IT GETS BETTER.......While eating my dinner at the picnic table in front of my château, Denise (an employee) pulls up on a golf cart to see if I like my cabin. Of course my Booyah always starts conversation. It use to be my brown eyes, hairy chest and 34 waist that started conversation, but something changed over the past 40 years. After explaining what I am doing with my Booyah, she thanks me and leaves. Five minutes later Kevin ( another employee and husband of Dodi) rides up. He said the General Manager of the KOA wanted to make a contribution to my efforts in bringing awareness to Jays Hope - a Macon nonprofit by offering me a free second night in the cabin. Since I was planning on a second night anyway, I will pay and he will write a check to them instead. Am I not a lucky guy? See you down the road. :)
