I AM POSTING THIS IN ALL CAPS TO EXPRESS MY CONTINUING RAGE AT THE MOVIE BUSINESS AND MEN!!! I JUST CAME BACK FROM SEEING PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR ( dont judge me!) AND EVERY MOVIE TRAILER AND THE PENGUIN MOVIE HAD A TOTAL OF FOUR WOMEN CHARACTERS!! The Penguin movie, one female token. The new Minion cartoon movie, all male. The new Peter Pan movie, one female lead (Tiger Lily, not Wendy) The new Night at the Museum movie, one female seen. The new spy movie with Benedict Cumberbatch, one female. The exception was Into The Woods which has a mixed cast, ironically featuring every female and male archetypical role you can think of. MEN, PAY ATTENTION NEXT TIME YOU GO TO THE MOVIES, YOU WILL NOTICE IT TOO. DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS FEELS LIKE???When we are not represented as human beings, only as tokens and always in some role, as connected to a man? The female bird in the Penguin movie is a token heroine, but she is really just there for one of the penguins to drool over. THIS IS 2014, DAMMIT!!! WHY ARE WE STILL SO STUCK??? FATHERS, WHAT MESSAGE IS THIS SENDING TO YOUNG GIRLS?? The message is that females are not participants, just bystanders. They are here FOR men in some way or other. Not here just to live their own lives. Not having to fulfill some idealized role of good/bad mother or loyal wife or object of desire. All one dimensional. The only time they are valued in movieland now is if they are kicking butt as fierce warriors like in Hunger Games and the one token female in any action movie.
