I (Angela) depart for India after class on January 18th, and return March 27. I’ll spend two weeks at an Ayurvedic ashram in the jungle in Tamil Nadu, then go to Mysore for practice, study and rest. Rachel Garcia is the only person in the world I trust to run this place. Luckily when I asked she said yes. She can teach new postures, and can dismiss anyone who doesn’t honor the two rules. You want me to go to India. Really. It’s not me that makes up the method or knows how to teach it skillfully - I follow the model of my teachers and senior colleagues. There is a lineage here, and because of my strong relationships within the practice, you are in it. The practice is not a sequence of postures. It is an evolving global research program held together by long term relationships. So I am going to go do research, and be in relationships, and rest. That last part is important too. As the steward around here, I have to take the long view. Periods of deep rest for teachers are crucial for a shala’s long life and vitality. Finally, those who have been around here a few years will tell you that my going to India is also good because it’s beneficial not to have me around. Really. Please render me obsolete for a while. You will see new stuff and grow deeper. The reason for the jaunt to Tamil Nadu is that the part of me that needs adventure hasn’t been fed since we started the shala. I considered a trip to Sri Lanka before realizing that any craziness I undertake should more clearly contribute to our local knowledge bank. Like me, a lot of you have started discovering Ayurveda the last five years. We are all new to this knowledge stream and lifestyle. Its source is ancient and shamanic - among hidden, forgotten jungle doctors in India. So I will go take a peek. The experience will not be comfortable. But that is the thing about adventures.
