I LOVE THIS VIDEO! A true Imam! Sh. Ali al Hudaify remembers he does not have Wudu after beginning the Salaah in the Prophets Masjid in Madinah. He orders the people to wait a moment and makes wudu from a water container nearby. Please watch and then read my discussion below to gather some Fiqh benefits. Ya Allah bless him with good and let him remain firm upon the Truth ya Allah. youtube/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=3hIiXawMlZU Some Fiqh to consider: An Imam is accountable for his Salaah and the Salaah of those behind him. It is a responsibility that at times is not taken with the gravity it deserves. ALL IMAMS at one point will doubt their Wudu status...but, DOUBT is not enough to make you break the prayer. A person MUST BE CERTAIN that their wudu is not intact. When that certainty is present, the Imam must stop the prayer. If an Imam breaks his prayer or Remembers that it was broken he can do one of three things: 1- If he finds someone capable of leading the prayer in his place he can ask him to step forward and continue the prayer from where he left of. This has been narrated from ‘Umar, ‘Ali, ‘Alqamah and ‘Ataa’. If he did not appoint anyone and the people prayed individually, this would be acceptable, and this is the opinion taken by Imam Al-Shafi‘i. If he elected someone and advanced him to lead them, that is also permitted. The evidence for this is what has been narrated regarding ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was stabbed. He ordered Abdur Rahman bin ‘Auf who led the prayer to completion. 2- End the prayer and everyone prays the remained of the salaah that is left on their own. If the Imam ends the prayer and does not nominate someone to continue because their is no one fit (as in the Case of leading 1000s in Madinah) you can continue the prayer if he ENDS the prayer. You continue what is left for you of it. 3- He can ask the people to wait for him to make wudu and Restart the Prayer from the beginning The Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) entered into the Fajr prayer and indicated to the people that they should stay in their places. Then he came back to lead them and water was dripping from his head. (Sunan Abi Dawud, No. 233; Sahih Sunan Abi Dawud, 1/45)
