I LOVE capitalism. Its the fastest way to raise the standard of living for the most people. HOWEVER, every man is a sinner, and the love of money is the root of many (all?) evils. So you could have monopolies if people were altruistic and unselfish, because they are very effective at keeping costs down. But because people are wont to be greedy, monopolies are bad, because they shut out competition (a must within a good economy) and then they can gouge the bajangles out of everybody because you cant go anywhere else. (Any cable companies come to mind?). So you cant have unbridled capitalism, because humans are weak and fall to temptation. So as a society, we have to say, lets all get together, and with all our varied agendas, lets push and pull and decide what seems fair to do in this situation and that situation, so when it comes up, you have rules to fall back on, like the constitution, or the Old Testament for that matter. Then everyone starts from that point and tries to wrangle a way to get around the laws to get just a little more. But at least we have a starting point. Some area that wasnt gray that we can go back to and say, Does what you are trying to do really honor the intent of that law? And minimum wage is there to insure that people are not taken advantage of. You could lower it to $4.00 and someone will be desperate enough to take it. But as a society we have said, Thats wrong. Now if you want to do something for low IQ people (Regular people, not celebrities or congress) you could try and pass a lower wage threshold for them, but man are you going to take a political beating for trying to take advantage of the helpless. But thats a VERY small percentage of the work force (outside of DC).
