I RECEIVED THIS MESSAGE FROM A MUSLIM - YOU ALL HAVE TO READ THIS BECAUSE THIS IS SUCH A COMMON QUESTION IN OUR UMMAH. PEOPLE ARE LIVING AMONGST ALL KINDS OF RELIGIONS AND THEY NATURALLY START ASKING Assalaam alaikum.. i am a muslim and born in a muslim family. i dont know what to do? i dont want to leave islam, and i know this is truth. but i feel like, every religion teaches good things and people do not follow it like some Muslims. i am confused, many modern scholars says same thing on bible and hindhu book or etc,, and why dont u follow your book? if same thing why should we follow islam, if their books say to worship one god why islam? why i should be muslim if every religion teaches good things? why? if they live like us, why muslims are different? MY ANSWER wa aleikum salam -may Allah protect you. I understand what you say and your feeling is not something strange in todays world where there are so many ideas and so much information. There are many people who are facing the same question. However, I must say that you must have not understood (with all due respect) Islam and what it means and what it means in relation to other world religions. So I will try to answer your question in a blunt way yet short and concise. First you are making a mistake in saying that Islam is a religion and Quran is a book and there are other religions and other books. This is a big mistake. I became Muslim 10 years ago. I was a Christian. I searched for the truth for many years before I became Muslim. A few things that I realised back then and I hold dear till today. There is only one God. If we establish that the next thing we need and its unavoidable is that HE WANTS SOMETHING FROM US. Why does God want something from us? Well because He loves us and He created us and He wants us to know him and worship Him. So what does HE WANT? That WHAT is His message to us. This is what is considered His book. This message is in His books and I say that in plural. Books that have been sent through messengers to human beings teaching them what to do. From the first man till today there were prophets sent. There were many books sent. We believe over 124000 prophets were sent and many had books. But why not only one prophet? Why did it not end up with Adam the first prophet and man? Because we human beings are always in a state of debate and we love to change things to fit our desires. And hence we changed Gods word more than once; actually we changed it thousands of times. So God out of His mercy kept sending us reminders and updates. Different people in different parts of the world, with different situations received messages. The messages taught them to be righteous and to obey God. They had rules and regulations that were appropriate for that time and place and need. BUT ONE THING TRANSCENDED ALL THE TIMES AND PLACES AND WAS NEVER UPDATED - GOD IS THE MASTER AND WE ARE THE SERVANTS. HE IS ONLY ONE AND WE WORSHIP HIM ALONE AND WE OBEY HIS COMMANDS IN SUBMISSION. This was a constant from day one. However, people could not stand to that. They changed and added gods and goddesses and worshiped idols and desires. They changed the words and the laws to fit their ways. This gave rise to religions - religions such as Hinduism and Christianity; Buddhism and Judaism. But the WAY OF GOD was always ISLAM. Not a religion but a way that was given from day one. Submission to the will of God. This message was always there. There is not such things as many ways to God. There was always one way. Remains of this are present in some ways in some of the books or religions that we have today; that is why YOU CAN SAY THAT ALL RELIGIONS TEACH SOME OF THE SAME PRINCIPLES - but here you have to be careful - because when you analyse careful some of the religions you will find that they require human sacrifice, washing with excrements and other things that one cannot phantom to originate from God. This is why a person with reason and rational will look at the world religions and ways and after careful analysis will realise that THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE WAY. AND while some people say WELL ITS ALL GOOD YOU CAN HAVE YOUR OWN WAY DONT WORRY YOU DONT HAVE TO FOLLOW THIS OR THAT a person with a good understanding of life will see that as FALSE. If we look at religions and what they call us to we can split it in a few categories and this should rest my case: 1. In general they all call to being good and treating others kind. 2. In general they all call to worship God but most of them associate partners with that - so they say we worship one God but they dont. They still insist that they are correct and they only worship ONE but they bow and ask for help from dead saints and holly people. 3. They all say we are the TRUTH but none of them are willing to proof their claims and to show that they are from GOD. If presented with contradictions or proofs that they cannot be from God rather they are deviations from the straight message of God, they say YOU JUST HAVE TO BELIEVE, YOU DONT UNDERSTAND. THEY COME UP WITH WEIRD EXPLANATIONS THAT VIOLATE THE SAME FACULTY THAT THEY ASK YOU TO USE TO COME TO THEM - YOUR reason. EXCEPT ISLAM - YES THATS RIGHT EXCEPT ISLAM. The most attacked way of life today is ISLAM. YET IT HAS STOOD FIRM AND STRONG and it has always provided those who seek truth the proofs they have been looking for. ISLAM is the way of life with GOD and the other ways out there are standing in clear violation of GODs principles. We only need to look around and see what religions have become today to understand this point. To end it - you said there are many books - I say there were many books. Now these books have become a game for people to move the masses to follow their way. No one can say well there are many books and they all have something good so I can follow anyone. Thats like saying there are many busses and they all have wheels and doors so I can get upon any one of them and reach my destination. THAT IS NOT CORRECT. There are many buses who will go to the wrong destination and if you get on them you will be LOST. Allah is one and will never or was never two or three or more. Islam has always been the way, and its not the Islam of 21st century or the Islam of prophet Muhammad or of you and I. It is the Islam of Allah. Today many people want to run away due to the easiness they might find in some other way of life. They dont have the restrictions Islam has and they think - well they all teach the same thing except for a few things that I would really want to do in life - so let me go that way. This just goes to show that such people are not following truth rather they are following their desires. Even in the other religions or ways of life they will find things that they dont want and they will change again. I hope that you understand what I have written and that you relies that the only path God will accept is to submit to him. It is not a title or a label or a religion that we are just free to choose here and there. It is a life, a journey of struggle and sacrifice, of giving and striving. It is a path that only those who are brave enough to admit that they have been presented with clear signs and that they have to submit even though they might not like it in some cases. Its not easy to wake up early to pray, its not easy to fast for long days, its not easy to cover and to pay zakat. Its not easy to hold yourself from your desires. This is Islam, its proofs are well know. Its challenges to the whole world are clear. And if you are in doubt as to what We revealed to our servant, then come with one chapter LIKE IT and call your helpers other than Allah if you are truthful Quran Surah Al Baqrah I ask Allah to help you understand what I wrote and to help us submit to His will.
