I Remember in Deming When ….. I celebrated only 12 birthdays. I thought it would be more than that but 12 it was because I moved to Deming after my 8th birthday and I left for the Navy when I was 20, before my 21st birthday. I remember so many details about growing up in Deming but now I can’t remember one detail of a particular birthday back then and that kinda bothers me. I do remember some parties where we had a piñata and my sister Janice sent me an e-mail last night where she reminded me of some parties in our back yard after we had the swimming pool and the enclosed area around it. There was a good size area to the side of the pool where we set up our big console record player, tables for snacks and had plenty of room to dance; but I do not now remember any details. Of course our family celebrated every birthday with cake, candles, presents and a favorite dinner. My dad’s favorite was German Chocolate cake which my mother made in 4 layers – I remember all those very clearly. The one birthday I do remember now was in the mid 80’s when I lived in Silver City. I think the reason I remember this one is because it involved music – and my favorite music from the 50’s as well. It was a month or so before my 39th birthday and Shirley and I went to the Buckhorn in Pinos Altos for supper. I remember walking into the bar and I could hear ROCK & ROLL playing and the sound was obviously coming from a sophisticated sound system. At the far end of the room farthest from the door and over the heads of the others there; I could see these big speakers attached to tripods. We found a table close to a disc jockey who had some equipment set up and playing records on a couple of turn tables. The speakers were definitely overkill for the bar area which wasn’t very big – but they sure had a good sound. When the DJ took a break I went up and talked to him. He had several trays and tubs of records and was definitely a fan of 50’s type ROCK & ROLL. If memory serves he was a new DJ at KNFT in Arrenas Valley and had an oldies show there on the weekend. I made a few requests, which he had and played and Shirley and I danced a little. On the way home I told Shirley that I wanted to come back and have supper here on my birthday. We had been back to listen to the music a few times before my birthday and the DJ had a pretty good idea about the kind of music I liked. So the Buckhorn was known for its prime rib and that’s what I ordered on my birthday. We had one of the front tables and the DJ knew it was my birthday so he played several of my favorite songs. Then after I had put down several Cognac and coffee after supper he announced that it was my birthday and he had a new song he wanted to dedicate to me for my birthday. I hadn’t heard this particular song before but it was released in 1985 on Ronnie Milsap’s Greatest Hits Album. It was his last “crossover” record (from C&W) and a perfect tribute to 50’s ROCK & ROLL and to me on my 39th birthday. youtu.be/ycRwYLcVAs8
