I Sent this to Councilman Kenyatta Johnson. Please read and share your thoughts and ideas. As we all know, Philadelphia is one of, if not the top city for Cell Phone Thefts. Men women and children are all becoming victimized all over the city through violence, deceit and trickery. Teaching how to become a tougher target is great. Getting citizens to join town watch is great also. I have done some research and found a resolution that will in fact drop cell phone thefts drastically with zero cost . I’ve looked at why thieves are so attracted to these items. They are a fast and easy turn over for cash. And a lot of it. Hundreds of dollars for some of the new smart phones. You can walk into a cell phone store or kiosk with 3 phones, from 3 different carriers and just get cash for them in any condition. There are even commercials asking to buy your old phones. Currently there is no legislation restricting these sales. The seller should have to prove ownership of the cell phones he/she is trying to sell via contract or bill with their name on it and or the purchasing establishment should have to verify through the cell phone carrier that the phone in question is not a lost or stolen phone. If it in fact is lost or stolen, 911 should be called. I want to work with the City on this to become law and need your support and help. Violators of this proposed law would be subject to fines, generating funds for the city.
