I Skyped with another artist last night for about an hour. It was really refreshing to talk shop and give encouragement, but one thing that stood out, which I am wondering how many people truly feel this way, is that Im not sure the importance of community, peers, colleagues, and support is truly understood by all artists. Having someone(s) to bounce ideas off of, get critiques from, give feedback to, and to even just talk shop and vent, is incredibly important to stay refreshed. I likened it to trying to create music with major pieces of equipment missing. Or trying to write songs while not listening to any music for years. This is like not having blood in your veins. I suggested that this artist even consider moving to another city to find that connection and community. It will suck you dry if you let it be and dont seek your support and peer group that truly helps and cares about you. I dont think this importance can be underscored enough. If you are a creative person, find your community. It will give back and help more than anything else, in your work and mental health.
