I Was at #StarvedRockLodge today and talked to reps from #autobahnsociety and Fox River supporters. These agencies protect our wildlife, water and ecosystems. Yet most had no idea of the damage our new frac sand mines will do to our ecosystem. I watched a presentation made by the Autobahn Society about birds of prey. The hawks prey on rodents and small reptiles. The presenter stated you can tell what your ecosystem is like just by seeing if there are birds of prey present. Rodents are 40 percent and bats are 20 percent of all mammals in the world (that includes humans). Our local sand mines are on prime farm ground. The farm ground is home to rodents and reptiles. With the rodents and reptiles removed by the mines the hawks and other birds of prey will leave. The mines will also eliminate food, use gargantuan amounts of water, eliminate the rodents and reptiles that provide food for birds and other wildlife, cause air-water-light-noise pollution and increase traffic. The mines dynamite the land causing disturbances in the environment that will disrupt wildlife for miles from the mine. The #fracsandmines will discharge 1.25 million gallons of water per day into small tributaries that will damage the wildlife habitat in and around the creeks. #Qualitysands of LaSalle will discharge the 1.25million gallons of water per day into the Pecumsaugan creek that dumps into the #IllinoisMichiganCanal by #Utica. That is where #Federallyendangeredbats now roost. This will change the bats habitat and possible reduce their numbers. Bats eat 3,000 insects per night. So our new mines will directly impact 2 species of mammals that represent 60 percent of the worlds mammals. How severely will this impact our entire ecosystem for generations. I hope we all become active in educating our congressman, local politicians, media, friends and neighbors of the environmental devastation that will take place in #LaSalleCounty. Our local politicians are selling our environment for a few dollars to support a volatile fossil fuel energy market. If the price of oil stays low and gas and oil fracking is not profitable we may be stuck with closed or barely operating mines that have already ruined our farmland and ecosystem. Take a stand. Protect our ecosystem. Rick Coleman President of C.O.R.E. Conserve Our Rural Ecosystem
