I actually found American Sniper a sad kind of movie. The boys father was a warlike crackpot. The family scenes are eerie, unnerving. Despite the main characters blind faith in his mission as a defender of the nation, as a soldier, he goes from one moral doubt to another. His wife keeps saying We are HERE. Come back!, as if meaning What are you doing THERE? --thus implicitly questioning the invasion. Gradually, the guy turns into an American (crusader) who no longer feels at home in the USA. He prefers hell, which is a lonely place. The racist statements made in the movie are many; however, since they are so arrogant, they evoke both pity and scorn. They wont convince any sane, moderately modest person. In the end, the character learns to save America by helping out the wounded at home, not in far-off Iraq. He tries to nurse the victims of the American small-and-big gun culture back to sanity. It is exactly at this point that he is killed -ON HOME TURF- by somebody from the same sick, belligerent club. In short, SAD. VERY sad. If I was someone thinking of joining the US armed forces, I wouldnt do it after having watched this movie. Of course, I am not a USA cinema goer. Movies like this press all the wrong cultural keys in me.
