SMT. SONIA GANDHI LAYS FOUNDATION STONE OF 7TH & 8TH UNIT New Delhi 20 June, 2013. The Chairperson of National Advisory Council Smt. Sonia Gandhi laid the foundation stone of the seventh and eighth unit of 660-660 megawatt of the Super Thermal Critical Power Project at Suratgarh on Thursday. The Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Shri Ashok Gehlot, the State Energy and PHED Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh were present on the occasion. The Super Thermal Critical Power Station is the biggest power station in the state. Six units of 250 megawatt each have been commissioned presently and the total installed capacity of these units is 1500 megawatt meaning 360 lakh units per day. Over 10570.321 million units power generation was achieved in the year 2012-13. Besides Indira Gandhi Canal Project, seven small hydro power projects are being operated under the Suratgarh Thermal Power Project. Of these, power is being generated from five units. Over 89.57 lakh units power was generated from these small hydro units in 2012-13.The power generated from these projects is being supplied by the Rajasthan State Vidyut Prasaran Nigam to the grid sub stations of Suratgarh, Bikaner, Bhadra and Ratangarh through three feeders of 220 kb. and 400 kb. The Suratgarh Super Thermal Power Station was given the energy conservation award by the State Government in 2011-12 for saving energy. The sanction for the seventh and eighth unit of Suratgarh Thermal Power Project was given in January, 2009 and its total estimated cost is Rs.7920 crores. Target has been setup to complete the construction of these units in 42 months. Over 672.873 hectare land has been acquired for setting up these units. The availability of water for these units has been ensured from Indira Gandhi Canal Project and efforts are underway for the availability of coal. M/s BHEL have been given the work order for setting up these units.
