I admire her work, but I disagreed with her about the first performance of Twelfth Night in her introduction to the play for the Riverside Shakespeare. No one is sure when the play was first performed, but if one believes the Italian Duke Orsinio became Shakespeares Orsino, she argued that Twelfth Night could not have been the play performed for Queen Elizabeth and her guest, Orsinio, at court on Jan. 6, 1602, because the dukes visit was announced only in late December, and therefore Shakespeare would not have had time to write Twelfth Night in time for the revels. But what if Shakespeare had already been working onTwelfth Night for weeks, and simply named (or renamed) his duke Orsino when it was announced that Orsinio would be visiting London? touch.latimes/#section/-1/article/p2p-78183380/
