I agree it is about loving thy fellow man to help each other struggle out of addiction and pain towards a higher goal that is existential (individual meaning) to all of us. Recovery doesn’t require god, but it does require a fair degree of selflessness and love to help each other cheerlead towards a mutual better life not only for us, but for our children and humanity as a whole. Man’s salvation is motivated by love, but is through the Jihad (struggle) of a painful existence… together. We are a hive mind, and America can lose that concept in it’s often selfish goals for individual and Machiavellian capitalistic social evolution. Hence old fashioned American libertarian ideology misses the point of us all being in this together. It’s as an arrogant an ideology as religious supremacy, the other side to the coin of dehumanization of others. I choose neither. I choose though. I definitely am cursed to make choices with consequences.
