I agree that command and control, and focus on shareholder value, are outdated ideas. I also agree that lean / agile / modern management is a better fit for the future. I do not agree that Milton Friedmans argument was to focus only on the return to the shareholders. That is not Adam Smiths, either. Profitable work means less resources are consumed (wasted), it is of higher value (what customers actually demand), and it is done in the right place at the right time. That is CSR: conservation of resources, satisfaction of more peoples demand, and greater access to wealth for all. Just because we have measures in place to see how much money goes to shareholders, etc., and dont have measures for the savings consumers (poor people are also consumers), the savings of natural resources not wasted, and to measure the quality of life improvements for consumers doesnt mean that profitable work is unfair. It just means were ignoring most of its effects.
